Things You Might Not Know About Valentine’s Day

I’ve never been a fan of valentines day and not fond of the cliched gifts of chocolates or flowers. But I know it’s harmless to have a public display of affection, anyway its one of the most popular holiday in the world.

So i just thought of sharing things you might not know about the event and also appreciate a little bit about its history.

It is named after St. Valentine who was a priest in Rome and is believed to have performed secret marriages opposing Emperor Claudius II who ordered single men not to be married as they can be better soldiers than those with wives and families. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius required that he be put to death. I wouldn’t blame the king for that.

Back in ancient times, Lupercalia an ancient Roman festival is conducted where thongs from the skins of the sacrificed animals, are being stroked by man to any woman who came near them. A blow from the thong was supposed to render a woman fertile. Women nowadays are so lucky!

Did you know that Cupid the Roman god of love, was the son of Venus, the goddess of love, is actually careless on how he shoots his arrows causing trouble in a playful way in his matchmaking and oftentimes punished by her mother. You better not be hit by cupid if that’s the case

Shakespeare romanticized Valentine’s Day in his work “Shakespeare in Love” a movie in 1998 with a story of a young writer, out of ideas and short of cash, meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays, a masterpiece that is Romeo and Juliet. I’ll make sure to watch this movie TODAY.

So much of the history! If you are feeling blue on this holiday, don’t worry you’re not alone, go watch movies and move on. But for those who does not like to celebrate this holiday in public like me, it’s definitely going to be “Netflix and Chill” and you what it means.
